Jagan Mahal: 60 rooms across 42000sqft

Hyderabad, July 19: A palatial house that Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is building in Hyderabad is under the scanner of the CBI, which has been asked by Andhra Pradesh High Court to probe the politician's assets.
Two days ago, CBI sleuths visited a 52,263sqft site (well over an acre) in Hyderabad's upscale Banjara Hills where Jagan's five-storey mansion, valued at Rs 300 crore by local real estate players, is nearing completion.
According to real estate sources, the building plan shows several escalators, lifts, a 200-seat mini-theatre, a library, a gym, and squash, tennis and volleyball courts, apart from a three-floor underground car park.

A local contractor said he had been commissioned to supply 24 train wagonloads of marble from Rajasthan so that about 60 rooms and bathrooms, each the size of a single-bedroom flat, could be floored with marble.
Lotus Mahal, which local people have begun referring to as "Jagan Mahal", will sprawl over a 10,000sqft area. The total floor area across the five storeys is estimated at 42,000 sqft.
CBI officials said the plot had been bought by Jagan's front companies. It is made up of six original plots ' numbered 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 ' at HUDA Heights in Banjara Hills' Lotus Pond locality, they added.

Jagan owns about two-thirds of the property while his sister Sharmila Reddy owns the rest, the sources said. Going by current property rates, the price of the entire plot should be over Rs 30 crore.
Real estate sources said Lotus Mahal would have nearly 30 bedrooms apart from an office complex, 20 servants' quarters and a two-storey outhouse in the backyard.
A builder said that but for the Telangana agitation, the mansion's price would have been Rs 700 crore. "Even at the downswing rates, it is roughly valued at Rs 300 crore."
On July 13, the high court gave the CBI two weeks to probe charges that Jagan had amassed huge wealth by laundering money during his late father Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy's term as chief minister between 2004 and 2009.

The complaint was filed by a Congress minister from the state.
Sources in Jagan's party, the YSR Congress, said their leader had taken time off his Odarpu Yatra for a month to concentrate on the construction.

A bureaucrat who visits Jagan almost every day said the mansion was modelled on the chief minister's residence at Begumpet. Jagan has set up his party headquarters at a rented bungalow in Jubilee Hills' Road No. 45.
"Jagan is confident that the new house will bring him good luck and also the goodwill of Congress workers," a party source said, indicating that Jagan hopes that many more Congress MLAs and MPs would join him by the time the house is completed.

Woman Dies of Allergic Reaction to the Dog She Had Sex With
By Brian Moylan, Jul 8, 2011 3:34 PM

Facebook TwitterStumbleUpon Tumblr Close After reading this weird news story, you will never have to read another weird news story ever again. It has everything: an insane premise, crazy people, crushing irony, sex, crime, and sex crime. It seems an Irish woman died after an allergic reaction to a dog—a dog she had sex with. Yes. Really.

From Ireland, the land of geniuses like James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, and Bono, comes this story of a 43-year-old woman who encountered a man in a bestiality chat room and then met him at his house in Limerick. She had sex with his Alsatian dog and then had a severe allergic reaction shortly afterwards, possibly from the dog's semen. She later died at the hospital. The incident apparently took place in 2008, but medical experts just confirmed the cause of death, because the case is finally making its way to court, not because it took them this long to get over the shock of how she died. The dog owner, Sean McDonnell, is charged with "buggery" for ordering the dog to commit the act. Buggery is apparently still a crime on the books in Ireland, so thank God for that. McDonnell is thought to be the first person charged with it since it was enacted in 1861.

So, next time you hear about a man biting a dog or a delivery driver run over by his own truck, just remember this story and remind yourself it's best to stay away from the weird news.

A BEAUTY firm is offering luxury makeovers - for CORPSES.

People who have died can now wear false eyelashes, hair highlights or metallic make-up when they meet their maker.

The slap is applied by specially-trained artists - with prices starting at £450. Cosmetics company Illamasqua calls it The Final Act of Self-Expression and is offering the service through a chain of London undertakers.

Joe Corre, joint managing director of Leverton and Sons, said: "Some people really want to express themselves even as they make the final journey into the afterlife.

"It can be very beautiful and touching for everyone involved."

Yesterday fans of the Illamasqua brand aired their views online about the service. One wrote: "It rocks my boat!" But another said: "This seems in rather bad taste."

Foreign buyers lifting U.S. home sales

Foreign buyers are helping to stoke home sales in U.S. vacation hot spots decimated by the real estate crash, especially in southern Florida.

For the 12 months ending in March, 31% of Florida's home sales were to foreign buyers, up from 10% in 2007, according to a survey by the National Association of Realtors.

In Arizona, 6% of sales in the same period were to foreigners. That was down from 11% last year but still up from 5% in 2007, the data show.

Foreign buyers are being enticed by low U.S. home prices, down 30% nationwide since peaking in 2006, and the weakened dollar, which makes their money go further. Since the start of 2006, the Canadian dollar has soared 18% against the U.S. dollar, while the euro has gained 22%, says data tracker Oanda.
U.S. home prices, meanwhile, have fallen far more than the national average in some places — down 55% from their peaks in Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Phoenix and 36% in Los Angeles, says Zillow.com. Those are three of the most popular areas for foreigners searching for real estate on Trulia's website, that company says.
The number of U.S. homes sold to foreigners dropped to 288,000 in the 12 months ending in March, from 224,000 a year earlier, the Realtors survey shows. But certain cities are seeing increases.
Sales are so brisk in the Miami region now that more houses and condominiums could sell this year than in 2005, the peak year, says Ronald Shuffield, president of Esslinger-Wooten-Maxwell Realtors in Coral Gables, Fla.

"International buyers have been the fuel for the Miami recovery," Shuffield says. About 40% of buyers are international vs. less than 35% before the bust, he estimates. In downtown Miami, the percentage of foreign buyers has risen even more, Shuffield says. Many buyers are South American investors snapping up condominiums to rent out, says Peter Zalewski of market researcher Condo Vultures.

In the Phoenix region, there are at least 20% more foreigners in the market now than usual, says Don Hammer, manager of Realty Executives in Paradise Valley, Ariz.

One of those shoppers is retired hedge fund manager Peter Duerr of Austria. He's planning to buy a home in Scottsdale, having sold one there in 2005. "The U.S. is a great buy right now," Duerr says.

The largest share of foreign buyers, 23%, come from Canada, the Realtors' survey found. China followed at 9%. The survey includes foreigners living abroad, those in the U.S. with long-term visas and new immigrants.

Chicago-based Harris Bank is on pace to make 25% more loans to Canadians buying U.S. homes this year than last, says Randall Raup, head of retail lending for Harris. Its top buying locations are Florida, California and Arizona, he adds.

Of the 20 most popular U.S. cities searched by foreigners on real estate website Trulia, eight are in Florida,

PIDUGURALLA (GUNTUR): Exactly a decade after farmers in Palnadu region

sold their kidneys to clear their mounting debts, poverty-stricken women from
the backward Palnadu region have fallen prey to clinical trials by a Hyderabad-
based pharma company.

The clinical tests on human beings, reportedly without the requisite permission
of the state government, came to light on Thursday when some of the victims
fell seriously ill in Piduguralla town. Many of those who returned from the lab after
the tests developed acute joint pains, swelling in arms and throat infections.
Acting swiftly, district collector V N Vishnu directed district medical and health officer Gopi Naik to rush to Piduguralla and probe the incident.
"Though the pharma company promised to pay us huge amounts before conducting
the tests, they paid me only 9,000," rued Shaik Bibi, who underwent the tests along
with several other women in the lab in Miyapur, Hyderabad.

The firm, breaking all rules, did not provide any information to the women on the
nature of tests conducted on them.
"Some middlemen engaged by the company take the illiterate women directly to the lab. This has been going on for some time now," sources said.
Though the women returned home without any complications, side-effects of the
pills they had consumed at the lab nearly 3-4 months back are showing now.
"I was perplexed when I could not walk even a couple of yards a few days ago.
Initially I thought it was a routine sickness. After going through medical tests here,
I came to know that it was the result of the drug administered at the lab in
Hyderabad," said Paila Dhanalakshmi.
Sources said the people selected for the clinical trials are `detained' in the lab for
four continuous days. According to the women, they came across people from
north Indian states also in the lab. "But we were strictly not allowed to interact
with others," a woman revealed. Most of the women who went from Piduguralla
are farm workers and daily wagers.

A counseling session is conducted for the selected people and later they are forced
to sign on a bond before undergoing the tests. "If everything goes well after
taking a tablet, the person is asked to visit the lab again after 10 days when an
injection is given. Another dose of injection is administered after 10 days.
We were paid Rs 9,000 for the three rounds of tests," said a victim Jakka Kumari.
"If any abnormalities in the blood samples are found or the volunteer
develops complications, he/she is sent back by handing over a mere Rs 1,000,"
stated a weeping Kommu Karunamma.
Sources said more than 40-50 people from Adarsh Colony, Chandrapalem
and Indiramma Colony in Piduguralla have been visiting the lab for the past few months.
When contacted, one of the brokers, Shaik Jameela, who reportedly took some
women to the Hyderabad-based lab, shot back: "The women are selling their
own blood and not anyone else's. What's the problem."
She claimed that the women she had taken did not complain of any side-effects.
Meanwhile, six of the affected women are being shifted to the
Guntur government hospital. "If we come across any irregularities, we will slap
a case against the pharma company," warned the DM&HO

Indians Swallow Raw Fish to Cure Asthma

India is known for the wide variety of folk remedies for various ailments, and one of the most popular right now is the raw-fish-swallowing therapy practiced by the Goud family, in Hyderabad.
Asthma is one of the most serious respiratory conditions a person can have, and since conventional medicine doesn’t offer a permanent cure, many are willing to try any kinds of treatment, no matter how bizarre. One of these is the fish swallowing cure offered by the Goud family, for the last 166 years. Every year, during the month of June, hundreds of thousands of people flock to Hyderabad to try this unusual remedy, on the day of Mrigashira Karthi. Around 500 volunteers administer the miracle cure: live 2-inch to 3-inch long murrel fish which have been fed a drop of the secret herbal formula the Goud’s claim cures asthma within three years.
Ingredients for the medicine are collected two-three months before the big day, mixed the day before using water from the Goud family’s well, and administered to asthma sufferers free of charge. The patient is advised not to eat or drink anything four hours before swallowing the raw fish and two hours after. Also, he must be aware that he must come back for the cure three consecutive years, if he wants to get rid of the asthma permanently.

The ingredients of the medicinal formula are a closely guarded secret so it’s practically impossible to know what effects it has on certain people, or if it actually works in any way. If you ask some of the people who have tried this raw-fish treatment, many of them will say it gives them great relief, but there have been cases when the “patient”, although having taken the medicine, suffered severe asthma attacks, and physicians warn that the fish itself could trigger an allergic reaction.

Child rights group Balala Hakkula Sangham has recently requested the raw murrel fish not be administered to children, claiming the process is unhygienic since the people handling the fish don’t even wash their hands. The Goud family refuses to reveal the formula, but says children aren’t in any kind of danger and that the people complaining were paid by pharmaceutical companies who produce conventional asthma drugs, worried the free fish therapy is affecting their business.

Seatmates spar over middle armrests

Airplane armrest unrest can start with a nudge, progress to a shove and develop into full-scale combat as you soar through the clouds
You may have dealt with this issue on your most recent trip. It's a question that has baffled frequent fliers forever: In a three-person row, who is entitled to the middle armrests?

"It's a battle with many people, and there is no simple solution," said John Safkow, a veteran United Airlines flight attendant and creator of cheeky airline information site marthastewardess.com. "They just have to work it out."

Some flight attendants and etiquette experts believe in the concept of middle-seat privilege — that the man or woman in that seat has a rightful claim to the coveted armrests. Others, like Safkow, do not think the center-seat occupant is the undisputed master of the armrests.

MORE FLIER UNREST: For travelers on packed planes, 'fight for the overheads' is on
During one armrest conflict, Safkow did side with the woman in the middle. But it was chiefly because the guy at the window was a colossal jerk.

"To raise or to lower the armrest is a big issue," Safkow said. "He wanted the armrest up; she wanted it down. Most people do. He was trying to recline over into her space. He was just going to camp out and make her miserable because some people have this entitlement issue going on when they get on the airplane."

Safkow added that this passenger was such a bully that he made the middle-seat woman, who was traveling to visit her cancer-afflicted mom, burst into tears.

To deal with the dilemma, Safkow enlisted the help of a burly, good-natured guy sitting a few rows away. Safkow explained the situation and asked if the big, friendly fellow would switch seats with the frazzled woman. He did. Guess how the brute in the window seat responded?

"Not a peep out of the guy for the rest of the flight," Safkow said. "He was all squished up against the window."

Safkow felt it was his duty to get involved in that particular armrest war because the offender was so clearly out of line. Otherwise, he wishes passengers would just grow up and settle it themselves.

"So many passengers act like children in situations like that. They'll tattle to the flight attendant and expect us to be the mediator," he said. "We feel weird about it because we're creating a scene when we go over. Everybody's watching."

If Laura Cummings, a regional airline flight attendant based in Louisville, was called upon to defuse an armrest tiff, she would stick to her strict belief in middle-seat privilege.

"As a rule, if there are three seats, the person in the middle seat gets both armrests, since the other two passengers can lean either toward the window or the aisle," she said. "You can, of course, also share. One person can get the back of the armrest in question, and the other can take the forward portion."

Jodi R.R. Smith, president of Mannersmith Consulting in Marblehead, Mass., also thinks that armrests are the dominion of the centrally seated, and that the aisle and window folks should be cognizant of their control.

"If the middle person is not using one or both of the armrests, then the outside people may, for the moment, use them," she said. "As soon as the middle person seems to want or need those armrests, the middle person gets them. —1/8 It is tough enough to be squished in like sardines!"

Amy Alkon, syndicated Advice Goddess columnist, has no sympathy for the sardines. She said it's ludicrous to assume the middle-seated passenger is blessed with both armrests.

"Everybody paid for a seat. Everybody gets a seat and a little bit of armrest," she said. Alkon is not moved by the argument that the window- and aisle-seat occupants have enough room to recline simply because they're not closed in by passengers on both sides.

"If the person in the aisle hangs their arm out too far, it's going to get chopped off by the drink cart," she said. According to Alkon, passengers need to deal with the issue before they even board the plane.

"If you want to have a different space, you have to prepare for what you're comfortable with," she said. "People don't like the middle seat. So you know what? Make a reservation sooner and get a seat that's not in the middle."

Patrick Hancock, an international flight attendant based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, believes in achieving armrest harmony through sharing. He said he has had to get in the middle of armrest fights between junior high students and other kids. In such cases, he tells them to imagine a dividing line down the middle of the armrest that must not be crossed.

"If I was called on to mediate such a dispute between adults, because they're acting like children, I'd give them the children rule," he said. "You have to share. You each get one half, and if you can't share, you can't have any."

Many hotels take 'bath' out of bathrooms

Want to take a long hot bath the next time you're on the road? Good luck finding a tub.

Bathtubs are disappearing from many hotels across the USA, going the way of a mint on the pillow, as chains use the freed-up space to install ever more luxurious showers.

Holiday Inn has gone from roughly 95% of its newly built hotels having tubs a decade ago to only 55% of new structures featuring them now. Marriott plans for 75% of the chain's rooms to have showers only. And Hotel Indigo, a 6-year-old upscale chain, never had tubs, except perhaps in suites.

The reason for the phaseout: Corporate trekkers don't have time for a long soak, and many travelers simply prefer showers, hotel officials say.

"Most business people are on the run and take a quick shower," says Bill Barrie, senior vice president of design and project management for Marriott, who says the industry has been shifting from tubs to showers over the last three to five years. "There's no time for baths."

"Plus," Barrie says, "the shower experience now can be pretty dramatic."

Marriott is using frameless glass shower enclosures and switching to doors that slide outside the bathroom wall to create more space. Holiday Inn offers Bath & Body Works products, curved shower rods and curtains that let in more light. Hotel Indigo touts its glass doors and handheld shower heads.

"Certainly when you do a glass-enclosed shower vs. a traditional shower tub combination … you'll feel you're in a more spacious environment," says Mary Dogan, Hotel Indigo's director of brand management in the Americas. Showers also make bathrooms look more clean and modern, she says. "Our customers prefer or appreciate the spa-inspired walk-in showers."

Still, some hotels want to provide a bit of both.

Embassy Suites found in a 2008 survey that a majority of travelers take a shower rather than a bath when on the road for work, but a tub or bath/shower combination is the first choice for vacations, especially when traveling with young children.

So there are tubs in the suites with two queen-size beds, which are popular with families, while the "King Suites," often used by corporate trekkers, feature walk-in showers, says John Lee, vice president of brand marketing at Embassy Suites Hotels.

Cute rodent species surfaces after 113 years

Scientists thought a mysterious guinea pig-sized rodent species that hadn't been seen in 113 years was long extinct. Until one of them ambled up to two volunteer naturalists at a nature reserve in Colombia two weeks ago.

"He just shuffled up the handrail near where we were sitting and seemed totally unperturbed by all the excitement he was causing," Lizzie Noble, who is volunteering with the ProAves Foundation, Colombia's largest bird conservation organization, said in a release.

The nocturnal animal, the elusive red-crested tree rat, turned up just as Noble and Simon McKeown were heading off to bed, at 9:30 p.m. on May 4. It spent two hours watching as the volunteer biologists took photos of it, then calmly ambled off into the darkness.

The smallish rodent, which they estimated weighed just under a pound, had a white and black tail and a distinctive red mane of fur on its head and looked like a guinea pig or a gerbil.

Because the naturalists were there to monitor amphibians, they had no idea what they were seeing beyond a cute little animal. So Noble emailed copies of the pictures she'd taken to naturalist Paul Salaman, who was also in Colombia at the time. Salaman is the director of conservation with the World Land Trust-USA. By coincidence, his organization had helped fund a team that spent over a year looking for the red-crested tree rat in Colombia between 2007 and 2008.

Salaman was deep in the hinterlands himself and didn't get to a place where he had internet access until May 8. When he read his email he was astounded to see the animals he and others had been looking for for years, he said by phone from Washington D.C..

"I said 'Oh my God, this is it!'"

The red-crested tree rat was known only through descriptions and the skin from an animal captured in 1898 that is at the New York Museum of Natural History, Salaman says. It was only in 2005 that Louise Emmons of the Smithsonian Institution, working from the pelts, identified it as Santamartamys rufodorsalis.
Salaman couldn't believe it. "We had two Colombian biologists in the field. They tried everywhere, they put traps in the trees, on the ground, they looked everywhere, and then it just walked up to these biologists," he says. "I called Lizzie on Skype and I said 'You just rediscovered these animals we spent years trying to find!'"

Very little is known about the animal. It appears to have no other rats in its genus, just as humans, homo sapiens, are they only representative of our genus. "It could be many tens of millions of years old," says Salaman. "An ancient relic of a rodent that happened to get isolated in this area."

There's no doubt the animal they photographed was the elusive red-crested tree rat, says Salaman. The photos were sent to the Smithsonian's Emmons and she concurred. "There's nothing else that's even remotely similar to it that occurs in this area," he says.

In addition, the animal popped up only few miles from where the original pelts were collected 113 years ago, he says.

The rodent was found in the El Dorado Nature Reserve, 2,000 acres of cloud forest preserved by the Colombian bird conservation group ProAves with help from the American Bird Conservancy and others. It is home to multiple endangered bird and other species in a region where coffee plantations and cattle grazing are rapidly destroying the forest.

The whole episode is slightly surreal, says Salaman. The animal actually met the biologists on the stair as they were heading up to their bunks "It climbed up the banister and walked up to them and sat there for two hours, It's almost as if it were trying to show it had survived."

That's the question posed by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention in a Monday blog posting gruesomely titled, "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse." And while it's no joke, CDC officials say it's all about emergency preparation.

"There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for," the posting reads. "Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That's right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you'll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you'll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency."

The post, written by Assistant Surgeon General Ali Khan, instructs readers how to prepare for "flesh-eating zombies" much like how they appeared in Hollywood hits like "Night of the Living Dead" and video games like Resident Evil. Perhaps surprisingly, the same steps you'd take in preparation for an onslaught of ravenous monsters are similar to those suggested in advance of a hurricane or pandemic.

"First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house," the posting continues. "This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored)."

Other items to be stashed in such a kit include medications, duct tape, a battery-powered radio, clothes, copies of important documents and first aid supplies.

"Once you've made your emergency kit, you should sit down with your family and come up with an emergency plan," the posting continues. "This includes where you would go and who you would call if zombies started appearing outside your doorstep. You can also implement this plan if there is a flood, earthquake or other emergency."

The idea behind the campaign stemmed from concerns of radiation fears following the earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan in March. CDC spokesman Dave Daigle told FoxNews.com that someone had asked CDC officials if zombies would be a concern due to radiation fears in Japan and traffic spiked following that mention.

"It's kind of a tongue-in-cheek campaign," Daigle said Wednesday. "We were talking about hurricane preparedness and someone bemoaned that we kept putting out the same messages."

While metrics for the post are not yet available, Daigle said it has become the most popular CDC blog entry in just two days.

"People are so tuned into zombies," he said. "People are really dialed in on zombies. The idea is we're reaching an audience or a segment we'd never reach with typical messages."

moon that looks like a pizza.

Nasa scientists have discovered a vast ocean of molten rock beneath the surface of a moon that looks like a pizza.

Io, which orbits the giant planet of Jupiter, is the most volcanically active world in the solar system.
Though it is only a quarter the diameter of the Earth, it produces around 100 times more lava than all the volcanoes on Earth put together.

Like a big pizza pie: The moon Io looks like a margherita pizza due bursts of lava peppering its surface

Now U.S. scientists at the universities of California and Michigan have found that the lava flows from an ocean of magma 20-30 miles beneath Io's surface and more than 30 miles deep.
Io's pizza-like appearance is due to material on the surface being constantly replenished by the eruptions that pepper its surface like a bad dose of acne.

The five-year-old boy who sold 3,000 monster drawings to pay for his own cancer treatment

By Daily Mail Reporter

A little boy fighting cancer is selling pictures he has drawn of his favourite monsters to pay for the treatment that could save his life.
Aidan Reed, five, from Kansas City, U.S., was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia on September 13 last year.
Since then he has undergone weeks of treatment as well as chemotherapy, infections, spinal taps and other painful procedures.

Fighter: Aidan Reed, five, from Kansas, U.S., has sold nearly 3,000 of his monster drawings and has managed to fund the treatment for his leukaemia

Parents Katie and Wiley were devastated by the diagnosis, but were given hope when experts said the type of cancer Aidan suffers from has a 90 per cent cure rate.

But the family faced a mountain of hospital bills and had to put their home on the market to fund treatment.
Amazingly, that sale is now on hold thanks to the idea of turning Aidan's passion for drawing monsters into a money-generating life-saver.
The little boy has sold more than 3,000 drawings, many of them sketched in his hospital bed as he underwent gruelling treatment.
Total sales topped more than $30,000 and Aidan has sold enough that his family were able to take their home off the market and they no longer require further funding for his care.
