Many hotels take 'bath' out of bathrooms

Want to take a long hot bath the next time you're on the road? Good luck finding a tub.

Bathtubs are disappearing from many hotels across the USA, going the way of a mint on the pillow, as chains use the freed-up space to install ever more luxurious showers.

Holiday Inn has gone from roughly 95% of its newly built hotels having tubs a decade ago to only 55% of new structures featuring them now. Marriott plans for 75% of the chain's rooms to have showers only. And Hotel Indigo, a 6-year-old upscale chain, never had tubs, except perhaps in suites.

The reason for the phaseout: Corporate trekkers don't have time for a long soak, and many travelers simply prefer showers, hotel officials say.

"Most business people are on the run and take a quick shower," says Bill Barrie, senior vice president of design and project management for Marriott, who says the industry has been shifting from tubs to showers over the last three to five years. "There's no time for baths."

"Plus," Barrie says, "the shower experience now can be pretty dramatic."

Marriott is using frameless glass shower enclosures and switching to doors that slide outside the bathroom wall to create more space. Holiday Inn offers Bath & Body Works products, curved shower rods and curtains that let in more light. Hotel Indigo touts its glass doors and handheld shower heads.

"Certainly when you do a glass-enclosed shower vs. a traditional shower tub combination … you'll feel you're in a more spacious environment," says Mary Dogan, Hotel Indigo's director of brand management in the Americas. Showers also make bathrooms look more clean and modern, she says. "Our customers prefer or appreciate the spa-inspired walk-in showers."

Still, some hotels want to provide a bit of both.

Embassy Suites found in a 2008 survey that a majority of travelers take a shower rather than a bath when on the road for work, but a tub or bath/shower combination is the first choice for vacations, especially when traveling with young children.

So there are tubs in the suites with two queen-size beds, which are popular with families, while the "King Suites," often used by corporate trekkers, feature walk-in showers, says John Lee, vice president of brand marketing at Embassy Suites Hotels.

Cute rodent species surfaces after 113 years

Scientists thought a mysterious guinea pig-sized rodent species that hadn't been seen in 113 years was long extinct. Until one of them ambled up to two volunteer naturalists at a nature reserve in Colombia two weeks ago.

"He just shuffled up the handrail near where we were sitting and seemed totally unperturbed by all the excitement he was causing," Lizzie Noble, who is volunteering with the ProAves Foundation, Colombia's largest bird conservation organization, said in a release.

The nocturnal animal, the elusive red-crested tree rat, turned up just as Noble and Simon McKeown were heading off to bed, at 9:30 p.m. on May 4. It spent two hours watching as the volunteer biologists took photos of it, then calmly ambled off into the darkness.

The smallish rodent, which they estimated weighed just under a pound, had a white and black tail and a distinctive red mane of fur on its head and looked like a guinea pig or a gerbil.

Because the naturalists were there to monitor amphibians, they had no idea what they were seeing beyond a cute little animal. So Noble emailed copies of the pictures she'd taken to naturalist Paul Salaman, who was also in Colombia at the time. Salaman is the director of conservation with the World Land Trust-USA. By coincidence, his organization had helped fund a team that spent over a year looking for the red-crested tree rat in Colombia between 2007 and 2008.

Salaman was deep in the hinterlands himself and didn't get to a place where he had internet access until May 8. When he read his email he was astounded to see the animals he and others had been looking for for years, he said by phone from Washington D.C..

"I said 'Oh my God, this is it!'"

The red-crested tree rat was known only through descriptions and the skin from an animal captured in 1898 that is at the New York Museum of Natural History, Salaman says. It was only in 2005 that Louise Emmons of the Smithsonian Institution, working from the pelts, identified it as Santamartamys rufodorsalis.
Salaman couldn't believe it. "We had two Colombian biologists in the field. They tried everywhere, they put traps in the trees, on the ground, they looked everywhere, and then it just walked up to these biologists," he says. "I called Lizzie on Skype and I said 'You just rediscovered these animals we spent years trying to find!'"

Very little is known about the animal. It appears to have no other rats in its genus, just as humans, homo sapiens, are they only representative of our genus. "It could be many tens of millions of years old," says Salaman. "An ancient relic of a rodent that happened to get isolated in this area."

There's no doubt the animal they photographed was the elusive red-crested tree rat, says Salaman. The photos were sent to the Smithsonian's Emmons and she concurred. "There's nothing else that's even remotely similar to it that occurs in this area," he says.

In addition, the animal popped up only few miles from where the original pelts were collected 113 years ago, he says.

The rodent was found in the El Dorado Nature Reserve, 2,000 acres of cloud forest preserved by the Colombian bird conservation group ProAves with help from the American Bird Conservancy and others. It is home to multiple endangered bird and other species in a region where coffee plantations and cattle grazing are rapidly destroying the forest.

The whole episode is slightly surreal, says Salaman. The animal actually met the biologists on the stair as they were heading up to their bunks "It climbed up the banister and walked up to them and sat there for two hours, It's almost as if it were trying to show it had survived."

Are you prepared for the impending zombie invasion?

That's the question posed by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention in a Monday blog posting gruesomely titled, "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse." And while it's no joke, CDC officials say it's all about emergency preparation.

"There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for," the posting reads. "Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That's right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you'll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you'll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency."

The post, written by Assistant Surgeon General Ali Khan, instructs readers how to prepare for "flesh-eating zombies" much like how they appeared in Hollywood hits like "Night of the Living Dead" and video games like Resident Evil. Perhaps surprisingly, the same steps you'd take in preparation for an onslaught of ravenous monsters are similar to those suggested in advance of a hurricane or pandemic.

"First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house," the posting continues. "This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored)."

Other items to be stashed in such a kit include medications, duct tape, a battery-powered radio, clothes, copies of important documents and first aid supplies.

"Once you've made your emergency kit, you should sit down with your family and come up with an emergency plan," the posting continues. "This includes where you would go and who you would call if zombies started appearing outside your doorstep. You can also implement this plan if there is a flood, earthquake or other emergency."

The idea behind the campaign stemmed from concerns of radiation fears following the earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan in March. CDC spokesman Dave Daigle told FoxNews.com that someone had asked CDC officials if zombies would be a concern due to radiation fears in Japan and traffic spiked following that mention.

"It's kind of a tongue-in-cheek campaign," Daigle said Wednesday. "We were talking about hurricane preparedness and someone bemoaned that we kept putting out the same messages."

While metrics for the post are not yet available, Daigle said it has become the most popular CDC blog entry in just two days.

"People are so tuned into zombies," he said. "People are really dialed in on zombies. The idea is we're reaching an audience or a segment we'd never reach with typical messages."

A little boy fighting cancer is selling pictures he has drawn of his favourite monsters to pay for the treatment that could save his life.
Aidan Reed, five, from Kansas City, U.S., was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia on September 13 last year.
Since then he has undergone weeks of treatment as well as chemotherapy, infections, spinal taps and other painful procedures.

Parents Katie and Wiley were devastated by the diagnosis, but were given hope when experts said the type of cancer Aidan suffers from has a 90 per cent cure rate.

But the family faced a mountain of hospital bills and had to put their home on the market to fund treatment.
Amazingly, that sale is now on hold thanks to the idea of turning Aidan's passion for drawing monsters into a money-generating life-saver.
The little boy has sold more than 3,000 drawings, many of them sketched in his hospital bed as he underwent gruelling treatment.
Total sales topped more than $30,000 and Aidan has sold enough that his family were able to take their home off the market and they no longer require further funding for his care.
